Museums in Burray and South Ronaldsay

 

Smiddy Museum, School Road, St Margaret’s Hope, South Ronaldsay (click for map): open in the summer season, this is a restored blacksmith’s Smiddy. It contains equipment and machinery ranging over the past century, along with a collection of horse-drawn implements and other smiddy-made artefacts. Fossil and Heritage Museum – car park entrance on Viewforth Road

Orkney Fossil and Heritage Centre, Viewforth Road, Burray, (KW17 2SY). Click for map – the Centre is on the A961. Open in the summer months (usually from mid-April), the Centre offers a fascinating collection of fossils plus a geological display that explores the formation of the islands. The fossil collection contains items around 500 million years old. There are also heritage displays covering life from the Iron Age to iron ships, the building of the Barriers, the prison camps and farming life. The Centre also has a cafe. Click to see more.
